More Secrets of Successful Exhibiting
Published in Paperback by Aviva Publishing (01 July, 1998)
Average review score:

Save your money. You know, typically people don't make you pay to read their advertisements. This is an exception. Each of the self-serving articles in this book is followed by a 1-2 page advertisement for the author that, not surprising, offers a service to solve the problem outlined in the article. How convenient! This book is a glorified collection of vendor-sponsored white papers.
More Secrets, More SuccessThis book was a valuable resource. Many tid bits of info that can really make a big difference for your success.

Nekrasov, Victor: Kira Georgievna (Bristol Russian Texts Series)
Published in Paperback by Duckworth (November, 1992)
Average review score:

Abstract.I am an English student translating Kira Georgievna and am finding it difficult to translate and therefore difficult to understand. Therefore I am in need of an english version as to understand the book better. If anyone can help, please get into contact with mr.
'Kira Georgievna' - An English student's viewpointI am an English student in London, studying Russian for A Level exams. We have been studying 'Kira Georgievna' as one of our texts, and have found it very challenging. Kira, a sculptress, is depicted by Nekrasov with sensitivity, although her character is by no means one which can be sympathised with. Her relationships with the many male characters in her life show her inability to commit to anything. Her lover, Yurotchka's naivety is taken advantage of, which shows her selfishness and egotistical nature. Her elderly husband Nicolai Ivanovich is a pathetic character because of his infirmity and apparent obliviousness to the way she leads her life. Vadim, her first husband, re-appears to further Yurotchka's self enlightenment, and eventually awakens Kira to her own selfishness. Overall, the book is an interesting exploration of many characters, not least in it's detailed depiction of Kira herself.

Oracle Dba Survival Guide
Published in Paperback by Sams (October, 1995)
Average review score:

Man, what a mediocre book.Virtually every time I've turned to this book for answers to specific Oracle questions, it has failed to have any useful answers. It does, however, have useful bits of advice like: "Warning: if you have instances or applications that are crashing, you may have some really serious problems." No kidding! "It is often more important to know where to find the answers than to know the answers themselves." Unfortunately, the answers I've needed have yet to be found in this book.
Superb DBA IntroductionAll that you would want to know to get started as an Oracle DBA is presented in this book. The author has diverse experience in large, small, development environments, data warehouses, etc. and is able to relate examples to go with his excellent presentation of technical essentials of Database administration. Far from exhaustive coverage, but just right for an introduction.

S&M: The Last Taboo
Published in Paperback by Blue Moon Books (1998)
Average review score:

Dull and pretentiousThis book disappointingly fails to live up to its fame. A turgid, stream-of-consciousness narrative of social criticism, it seems only indirectly interested in its own subject matter. Wading through this dull and totally unerotic tome is in itself an exercise in masochism.
A Cool Book for Spanking Lovers! There are very few books out there that talk about spanking and S&M in much detail. Thus, for those interested in this type of kinkyness this book is great! It's not scientific or dull, it's funny, interesting, and chatty.
The collection of excerpts from other books at the back is unmatched in its erotic appeal - it will melt you

Teaching As a Performing Art
Published in Paperback by Teachers College Pr (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Weak performanceThis book is dull. For a potentially interesting topic, it was like chewing grits without salt, little substance and no flavor. It was a waste of time and money. I threw it into the recycle sack where it could be put to better use.
A Tour de Force by a Uniquely Accomplished ObserverThis remarkable book explains that teachers need to be just as accomplished performers as are successful artists - actors, orchestra conductors, dancers, or singers. It discusses how this need could be dealt with in teacher preparation programs. It will be heartwarming for teachers who already know this; it will be an eyeopener for anyone who believes that teachers require only knowledge of the subject to be taught. I believe that the problems of teacher quality will not be resolved until the observations in this book are widely understood and acted upon. Moreover, this book is very timely. The issue of teacher preparation and teacher quality has now become central to education reform nationally, thanks to pressures from teachers themselves, from their unions, from the existence of the National Board on Professional Teaching Standards, and from a growing political focus on teacher quality. Another eyeopener is "The Teaching Gap" by James Stigler and Jmaes Hiebert, which explains how and why teaching is different in Japan from what it is here. (The differences are partly due to a visit to Japan by John Dewey early in this century.)

The American Byron: Homosexuality and the Fall of Fitz-Greene Halleck
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Wisconsin Pr (April, 2000)
Average review score:

As John's partner at just before publishing.....This book, an interesting documentary of 18th and 19th homosexuality in America captured my interest though it was a subject I would normally become absolutely bored. Jack's style is so intense that the reader is quickly pulled into his "spell" in the process, becoming immersed in the emotional outpouring of grief as well as the inability of Fitz-Greene Halleck to find any romantic/emotional support which could fill his void. So exemplary are these allusions, this reader was not sure who exactly was being documented. Life did not get any better with the loss of his one love; a love who could never give him what he wanted though it is never clear why. The fact that he was married was an indication that he was "in the closet" and it is not disclosed whether or not a physical/sexual relationship was ever consumated. Dr. Hallock spent much time researching the facts for this book and when finished(10 years of research), it was as if "Fitz-Greene" could finally rest. Enjoyed the book immensely, reading it with Jack's mother in his house in Philadelphia - though it appeared he was able to bring the emotions of Fitz-Greene to life. Well worth the paper back, at least.

Art & Design Scholarships: A Complete Guide
Published in Paperback by Conway Greene Co. (March, 1995)
Average review score:

Good for choosing schools, not scholarshipsI was looking for a good source for scholarships and grants for art and design students that could be used at the school of your choice. This book turned out to be a comprehensive list of all the art programs in schools in the US, and the scholarships that they offer. There was not info about how to apply directly to the scholarships, and/or if they were applicable to other schools. Bottom line: If you haven't chosen a school, it may help you, but it's of no use if you are already enrolled ( you can then get info about aid directly from your F/A office). I am still looking for a good list of art and design specific scholarships, and would appreciate any leads......

Caring for Our Forests (Caring for Our Earth)
Published in Library Binding by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (September, 1991)
Average review score:

Care for your forests! This book talks about what forests are and why they are important. We can learn to help save the forests we have left and begin to appreciate them. Also can learn about what can or is happening to forests that depletes them. This book has small chapters for readers who are beginning to learn how to separate topics. Also consists of "words to know." Contains black and white pictures and relates to Earth Celebrations by appreciating what we have and try to recognize the need to help preserve the land for future generations.

Classical Mechanics With Maple
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (December, 1995)
Average review score:

It sure wasn't what we were looking for.We used this book as the textbook for a course on Classical Mechanics at Trinity Western University. The actual book was decent, but there were only about 6 practice questions (on average) for each of the 5 chapters. My professor had to resort to giving us supplementary material so we could cover all of the material of a University-level Mechanics class. The book was okay, but it could have used some work.

Creation of Quabbin Reservoir: Death of the Swift River Valley
Published in Paperback by J R Greene (August, 1987)
Average review score:

A painful readMy intention in reading a book on this subject was to get a general overview of what happened in the days leading up to, and following the creation of the Quabbin. This book did provide it, but at what price? It was an excrutiating read....the spelling and grammatical errors alone were enough to make me put the book down several times. It was like reading a high school student's work. And the extent that the author goes to in detailing the politics involved (and there was a lot of politics) were enough to induce catatonia. Perhaps something that focused a little less on the politicians and a little more on the inhabitants of the area would've better suited my needs.
